DescriptionThe human mind naturally tends to chaos such as stress, a state we can self-regulate with the help of technology. But how does technology help the mind to be calm in order to alleviate stress and enhance well-being? While the brain naturally augments itself with real-world elements to compensate for its weaknesses, biofeedback blurs the boundary between brain, body and world. This thesis identifies common denominators, both in the way we use technology to augment our physical body, and the way things shape our cognition. Interactions with technologies in the fields of mindfulness, biofeedback and knitting were compared through design ethnography, a participatory workshop and self-experiments. Three conceptual objects knitted with electronics – “Stop, Breathe, Knit” - transform these research findings into a wearable narrative experience, triggering audio stories from different perspectives: the calming mind that extends itself in the body, in the nature and in technology.
