DescriptionThe first movement of Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto is a coherent work of immense compositional integrity. This musically evocative composition simultaneously features the unification and variation of multiple musical elements in order to achieve synthesis, and consequently the ultimate expression of emotion. The Concerto’s first movement invigorates strong emotional responses in audiences; taking listeners on a journey through transcendent atmospheres and expressively contrasting moods. In this thesis, I will investigate the treatment of various musical concepts in order to better understand how such emotionally impacting effects are achieved. By analysing his unique utilisation of compositional techniques, I aim to reveal how Rachmaninov ultimately transports audiences into another realm.
