DescriptionEmotions are based on abstract phenomena, making them difficult to define and quantify. Though our experiences of emotion are subjective, we have a deep need to understand and communicate their complexities and effects on our lives. Unfortunately, even if we are aware of our emotions, we are constrained to written or spoken language to express them. The stimuli that cause our emotions, and our mental and physical reactions to them, make up our emotion data. The systematic visualization of this data brings tangibility, reveals patterns, and provides a visual
language for expression. In this thesis, I outline how two fields, social sciences and data visualization, can influence and aid one another with their expertise. In addition, I lay out a set of guidelines to encourage an interdisciplinary approach to designing tools for emotion recording. These guidelines act as a manifesto
for designers and a summation of needs for each intended audience of the research. Through the practical design solution, I offer a system, in the form of a digital application, for the recording, visualization and analysis of emotion. The result is an experience designed to provide users a path for gaining emotion awareness.
