Among the modernist avant-gardes, making marionettes became established as a widespread artistic practice. The collection boasts an extensive array of these unique artworks. Examples of marionettes crafted by protagonists of the avant-garde such as Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Otto Morach and Alexandra Exter share space with works by Ernst Gubler and other designers from the milieu of the Zurich School of Applied Arts. The stock characters from Fred Schneckenburger’s marionette cabaret open up the design spectrum in the direction of political cabaret.
