Theater that deals with existential sociopolitical issues is today more alive and relevant than ever. In order to reach the right audience, a client needs to have the courage to countenance visual communication that makes the progressive spirit and radicalism of the play or its elements of poetry and fantasy visible in the advertising poster. The image will then be sure to stand out on the streets, its innovative trenchancy setting it apart from the wasteland of commercial visuals. One need only think of the campaigns for the Theater Neumarkt or the Schauspielhaus Zürich. The posters for Swiss stages presented here represent a cross-section of the last decades, beginning in the turbulent 1980s, and at the same time reflect contemporary graphic design.
