Would you like a Coke, a Fanta or perhaps a Rivella or Pepita? The world of soft drinks is colorful, diverse, and tempting. Soft drinks usually consist of carbonated water mixed with a sweet and sour flavoring or syrup. Non-alcoholic drinks already existed in Roman antiquity, but it is only since the invention of the “original soft drink,” Coca-Cola, in 1886 that new drinks have been constantly coming onto the market. In 1942, the Mineralquelle Eptingen AG launched Switzerland’s first very own sweet drink – Sissa Grapefruit. The artist Herbert Leupin, in charge of the mineral water company's advertising posters, came up with the idea in 1949 of redesigning the beverage’s logo, thus giving birth to Pepita and its signature parrot. The Swiss national drink Rivella, with its unique whey blend, conquered the Swiss palate in 1951. Although the two thirst quenchers never made it onto the international market, they are seasoned protagonists in the world of soft drinks.
