«Johannes Itten’s Color Theory in 80 Charts»
Johannes Itten (1888–1967) devoted his entire life to theories and principles of color. What he learned in Stuttgart and tried out himself in Vienna, Weimar, and Berlin, he later incorporated into the classes he taught at the Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich starting in 1939, also acting as director there until 1953. Itten organized an exhibition at the Kunstgewerbemuseum Zürich in 1944 titled «Color in Nature, Art, Science, and Technology» to present his color theory for the first time in a comprehensive and systematic fashion, using eighty charts arranged by theme. These show the twelve-part color circle and color star, the seven contrasting colors, as well as color harmonies, different forms of color, and color analyses of Old Master paintings.
