«ABM: Ernst + Ursula Hiestand»
The over-thirty set in Switzerland still have vivid memories of the ABM department store (Au Bon Marché), or at least of the showy plastic shopping bag with its pink and orange polka-dots! The bag was the brainchild of the graphic designer couple Ernst and Ursula Hiestand, produced in the early 1960s as part of a comprehensive visual identity that the store cultivated until 1999. Also included were a free newspaper, a modular labeling system, and modern shop design. Ursula Hiestand in addition designed posters for the department store until the 1990s.
