Biogramm: Sohn des Romanschriftstellers E.C.B. Stud.: Univ. College School, London; Heatherley's School of Art. Mitgl.: 1946 Soc. of Industrial Artists; 1974 R.Soc. of Arts. Vor und nach dem 1.Weltkrieg freischaffend als Journalist, Autor und Karikaturist tätig. Während des Krieges Vize-Dir. des Home of Intelligence Unit und Herausgeber in der Publ.-Abt. im Minist. für Information. 1958-62 zeichnete B. tägl. Cartoons für The Daily Mail, auch für Private Eye, Radio Times, Sunday Telegraph, Punch usw. tätig. Arbeitete 1962/63 als Ed. bei der Sunday Times Publ. Ltd. und 1963-67 für Thomas Nelson & Son. Durch seine Ill. für H.Bellocs, New Cautionary Tales, 1930 (als Nachfolger von B.T. Blackwood) wurde er bekannt. Er schulte sich an Caran D'Ache und Olaf Gulbransson. B. war ein guter Kenner der viktorian. Ära. Von hervorragender Beobachtungsgabe zeugen seine stets ohne Hintergrund mit klaren, einfachen Linien gezeichneten, elegant wirkenden, humorvoll aufgefaßten Figuren. Er schuf zahlr. Buch-Ill., z.B. zu Büchern seines Vaters More Biography, 1929; Clerihews Complete, 1951; L.Russell, Parody Party, 1936; J.Tickell, Gentlewomen Aim to Please, 1938; J.B. Morton, Here and Now, 1947; G.Mikes, Komische Leute, England und Amerika neu entdeckt, 1961; Eureka! Rummaging in Greece, 1965; Tsi-Tsa: Biography of a Cat, 1978. Auch Ill. zu T.S. Eliot, Old Possum's book of practical cats, 1.Aufl. 1940, dessen Verse die Vorlage zu dem erfolgreichen Musical "Cats" bildeten.
