DescriptionGiovanni de Macque (1548/50-1617) was a leading composer of the late Franco-Flemish school, and a prominent figure of the Neapolitan music scene. However, due to several historical reasons (which I will specify at length below), he is largely unknown today, at least in part due to the ever-rising popularity of his colleague, friend and erstwhile employer, Carlo Gesualdo, who represented a similar style. However, diving into his own dynamic compositional career and development course reveals a unique and remarkable composer, whose ever-evolving musical sophistication and innovativeness is indeed striking.
