DescriptionThe author studies in her thesis Szymanowski's Symphony No. 3 Song of the Night op 27 for solo tenor, mixed chorus and grand orchestra. She discusses how the Third Symphony shows Szymanowski's distinctive musical language and why it is evidence of his mastery of rich orchestration and of his understanding of each instrument's individual colouristic potential. She aims to prove that the string instruments, and especially the violin, play a crucial role in the piece, often being even more important than the tenor solo part. Another significant topic raised in the thesis is the role the Orient played in inspiring Szymanowski's work.
