Description"The capability to innovate is key for businesses to guarantee their survival. But what does it mean to innovate, to be innovative? Despite innovation being a big buzzword today, many businesses are still blind in leveraging their full potential. An element fundamental to unleashing this potential is the "innovation culture" - and the right culture is key for companies to drive innovation. I take a close look in my work at innovation cultures and elaborate how their full potential can be leveraged by establishing so-called "design proposals" - company-specific interventions elaborated by its employees to build the desired culture of innovation. By comparing the existing literature on the topic of innovation culture, I realize that the current theory is not fully capturing the potential of involving the employees in the design process. To find opportunities, I analyze the practical experiences of key people being in a strategic position in businesses which run global innovation initiatives and foster an innovative business culture. I also reflect on innovative cultures based on my 20+ years of experience in a large corporation in the financial industry.
By applying the "strategic design's" iterative design process, I combine the theory and the practical experiences and define key dimensions and aspects of innovation cultures and elaborate powerful tools to build individual design proposals. The completion of the design process distills two tools, namely they "Innovation Culture Matrix" and the "Ideation & Prototyping Workshop". Refined in a testing loop with the same key people from the practice, those two tools form the foundation of the consulting concept.
The innovation Culture Matrix classifies the main culture aspects along the dimensions leadership / attitude / frame / skills (vertical) and Board of Directors / CEO/ middle management / employees (horizontal). Also, the matrix pays attention to the ambiguity of innovation cultures - as these cultures have fun elements that need to be counterbalanced with tougher behaviour. The Ideation & Prototyping Workshop is the tool for corporate innovations - based on the guidance of the generic Innovation Culture Matrix.
My work adds further insights on the research of innovation cultures and provides concrete tools for businesses to create tailormade, human-centered design proposals that help to build their desired innovation culture. Only a "culture" of innovation drives repeated "innovation" and helps companies to achieve sustainable "growth" that creates "value"."
