DescriptionThe practical piece of my master’s thesis, “Peace to the People! city walkshops led by refugees”, is video footage of the pilot of a city walkshop. In this research, the format of a city walkshop is conceived as a participatory city walk followed by a collaborative mapping workshop. It gathers refugees, immigrants, and locals to jumpstart a dialogue on social equality, pacifist activism, and inclusive public spaces in Zurich West. Days after the walkshop takes place, participants create a postcard with a picture they had taken during the walkshop and a call to action! For sociallyinclusive practices, written as a prompt on the back of each postcard. The set of postcard is presented as a weekly invitation for whoever wants to see positive changes in their communities. This research aims to shed light on the socio-political aspects that prevent the interaction of refugees, immigrants, and locals living, working, or studying in the district of Zurich West. This hybrid format focuses on better understanding the positive impacts that creative and transcultural cooperation between refugees, migrants, and locals could have on their livelihoods. It also addresses the risks of reproducing unequal power dynamics and possible revictimization of refugees. It explores ways to encourage immigrants and locals to gain a deeper awareness of how the historical and political baggage can obstacle the chance for refugees to thrive. Ultimately it inquires about ways to foster dialogue instead of division.
