Description«Mitte 1929 ging in Stuttgart die Ausstellung «Film und Foto» zu Ende, direkt danach erschien ein epochales Buch. Mit einem Titel wie ein Blitz: «Foto-Auge». Man sieht ihn kaum, weil Tschichold will, dass wir das Auge in der Handfläche betrachten. Und in der Hand den Zirkel des «Konstrukteurs», wie El’ Lisickij dieses starke Selbstporträt betitelt hat. Drei Linien behüten den in drei Sprachen und Blindprägung geflüsterten Titel, acht Punkt stark sind die beiden vertikalen Linien und nur einen Punkt die horizontale Linie, damit wir wieder genau hinschauen.»

“Halfway through 1929, in Stuttgart, the exhibition "Film und Foto" came to an end, immediately followed by the release of an epochal book, "Foto-Auge". The meteoric title: photo-eye. Barely visible, because Jan Tschichold wants to let us observe the eye in the palm of the hand. And in the hand, the compass of the "Builder". That was the title assigned by El’ Lisickij to this intense self-portrait. To preserve the embossed title whispered in three languages, three rules—eight points for the two uprights, just one point for the horizontal—intervene to make us look again.“
