DescriptionAbstractAurora is a visionary lighting system for public spaces that uses floating, user-responding and context-aware light sources.
This project asks what functions and services these new qualities imply, how they can encourage social interaction, and how initial rejection through the public can be reduced—all while creating a harmonious experience.
Approaching sustainability from the angle of material-efficiency, this project examines the potential of flexible infrastructures. Also, Aurora combines the positive features of present-day lampposts and formerly used hand-held lanterns.
Various mock-ups were presented to test participants, both in the lab and the city. This revealed how people spontaneously react to such an artifact, what they expect its behavior to be, and how they characterize it. The insight were reinserted into the iterative design process.
Altogether, Aurora uses lighting to let people define public space themselves: The city adapts to them—not vice versa as usual.
