Czech and Polish film posters of the 1960s and 70s mark a high point in the history of posters. The political optimism of the years before the Prague Spring led to the unleashing of hitherto unsuspected creative energies. A young generation, unencumbered by history, made playful and unorthodox use of the great repertoire of stylistic trends in art history. The Constructivist and Surrealist traditions of the interwar period were revived, as was the picture poem trend of the 1920s, with its associative compositions of image and text. But contemporary avant-garde movements also influenced film posters, turning them into works of art in their own right.
