Works of «The Lettera volumes – Less is a bore»
In the emerging magazine market of the sixties, the imaginative title fonts of the Lettera volumes (1954-1972) struck a chord. They offered a fun alternative to the reductionist Swiss Style. By the nineties, Niggli Verlag had published several editions of the four type specimen books with their novel and refreshing designs and sold them in some sixty countries. Today, the fonts are highly sought after by “typography nerds.” Examples include Walter F. Haettenschweiler’s legendary Schmalfette Grotesk, which was already used in cult magazines such as Twen, along with other typefaces he presented in Lettera, such as OP-Letter, Yardley, and Face. Once found on record and book covers, posters, façades, and neon signs, today they also pop up on websites and in film credits.
