«A tribute to Henryk Tomaszewski»
In the years after 1945, the graphic artist and illustrator Henryk Tomaszewski (1914–2005) influenced entire generations of young designers in Poland, but his work also left an indelible mark internationally. Eschewing graphic modernism, the Polish poster school remained true to the painterly tradition. Tomaszewski’s cultural posters combine poetic images and subtle humor in a highly original manner. His illustrations are symbol-laden pictorial signs that enter into a playful dialogue with the typeface. “All my life I have tried to find signs that everyone can understand,” Tomaszewski commented on his work. His 1965 poster “Peace between Nations” truly lives up to this claim, sending a timeless and universal message.
