Coming up with a good idea is commonly symbolized by an illuminated light bulb. US researchers even claim to have measured new impulses in the brain when a light bulb is switched on. The symbolism of a light bulb and the association of light with creativity and inventiveness can thus even be regarded as scientifically proven. Even the shape of the light bulb refers to the head. Thomas Edison is considered the inventor of artificial light because he refined the filament and connected lamps to a powerful electrical grid. At first proudly displayed as the epitome of modernity, the light bulb later came to be hidden behind a lampshade. Lately, however, light bulbs have been coming out of hiding again.

For all their beauty of form, incandescent lamps are nonetheless very inefficient. Switzerland and the EU have therefore banned the manufacture and sale of lamps with low energy efficiency. As a result, more and more LEDs are being used and the incandescent lamp lives on only as a symbol.
