«All the Colors of the Rainbow»
When sunlight is refracted and deflected in raindrops, it creates a rainbow of spectral colors that always appear in the same order. But there are also iridescent color gradients in nature that differ depending on the vantage point. These shimmering color patterns have found their way into the surface design of ceramics, textiles, and printed matter.
The title song «Over the Rainbow» from the musical film «The Wizard of Oz» (1939) spirits the listener away to an idyllic world beyond sorrows and cares. For the US troops in World War II, this song became an expression of longing for home, and in the 1960s the anthem of the gay movement. Colorfulness in general stands for nature and childlike cheer, for political neutrality, and for cultural and sexual diversity.
