«Jean Widmer – eine Hommage»

«Jean Widmer – a tribute»

Jean Widmer, who did his training in Zurich, is known for the visual identities he created for Parisian cultural institutions including the Centre Pompidou, the Musée d’ Orsay, and the Bibliothèque nationale de France. He had previously made a name for himself as art director at the Galeries Lafayette and the Jardin des Modes. The logo he designed for the Centre Pompidou is known far and wide, and his brightly colored, formally abstract poster series for the Centre de création industriel (CCI), as well as his pictograms for tourist attractions, which lined the French national routes for years, are likewise vividly remembered. Widmer, today 94 years old, is also an acclaimed painter and sculptor whose work in the Concrete style is exhibited internationally. Seven years after he bequeathed much of his commercial art to the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich, some of his artworks have now been added to the national French art collection, along with a best-of selection of his commissioned graphics.
