«The circle as motif»
The circle and its three-dimensional form are considered to be the archetypes of life and are found in many elements of nature. The motif may symbolize the sun or moon and be invested with numerous meanings. Both the circle and the sphere have an inside and an outside, so that they can enclose as well as exclude. The shape conveys wholeness, centeredness, infinity, and protection, but it also stands for immobility and stillness. In graphic art, this formal element is often used to convey such qualities and emotions abstractly. In the selection of works presented here, the circle is mostly used to determine the image, is lending rhythm, focus, or weight to the composition. Posters with multiple circles, by contrast, often make a light and playful impression.
