«Glass»

The holdings in the glass department go back as far as ancient Roman flacons but focus mostly on the period around 1880 as well as studio glass since 1970. The Jugendstil era is represented by the typical plant motifs rendered using grinding and etching techniques and produced by the major glass manufactories, followed by examples of geometric ornamentation from the 1920s and the monochromatic tones of Art Deco. Groups of works by various artists display the trend away from utilitarian objects in the direction of glass as sculpture.
